"Lance,"as he prefers to be
known, is a resident of
London's prestigious
Regent's Park (NW1 ZOO).
Bless him, he can't keep his
pipe alight for more than 15
seconds, but he serves as a
reminder that we not take
ourselves too terribly
seriously.
- JWL, your Webmaster
"... CONTENTED STURNINE HUMAN FIGURES, a dozen or so of them, sitting around a
large long table... Perfect equality is to be the rule; no rising or notice taken when anybody
enters or leaves. Let the entering man take his place and pipe, without obligatory remarks;
if he cannot smoke...let him at least affect to do so, and not ruffle the established stream
of things."
- Thomas Carlyle, describing the smoking room of George I of Hanover

Roger, who has quite the
twinkle in his eye reports:
"My Grandfather told me that he
smoked 'Three Nuns' during the
war - Nun yesterday, Nun today
and probably Nun tomorrow!
(groan)."
AND, Roger shared this pipe smoking tip from "Joaquin Verdaguer
and his lovely, quirky book 'The art of pipe smoking'. When filling
your pipe, take a single cigarette paper and twist it into a ball and
deposit it at the bowl's bottom. Then fill the pipe as usual. By
means of this filter your pipe will have excellent aspiration and your
tobacco will be consumed up to the last shred. No dottle, no
waste!"
But, Roger reports, "I only use it with briars, not in my
meerschaum."

RICHARD WHITE
UK686E (right)

Richard smoked a pipe as an affectation in his late
teens.
He's come back to it since finding some unopened tins of
dried out Balkan Sobranie in his dead father's desk.
Unsurprisingly, his girlfriend finds it 'Cool' and 'Manly'.
He rather enjoys the ritual. He's trying hard to keep it
down to eight pipes (but knows that's a vain hope).
'Smoking a pipe just seems to fit', he says. He looks
forward to meeting, learning and sharing with us all.
RASMUS FOERSTER (right)

A WARM WELCOME TO YOU, RASMUS!
He writes:

"Dear ladies and gentlemen! I would
like to introduce myself, my name is
Rasmus Foerster. I am 57 years old
and live in the region of Stuttgart in
Germany.

It is my birthday-present of my
colleagues to become a member of
the Pipe Club of London.

I am biologist and I work at the
“Landeskriminalamt Baden-
Württemberg” as a forensic expert.
We investigate stains from crime
scenes using DNA analysis.
I began to smoke pipes when I was twelve years old and I am very interested
in English and Danish pipes and tabaccos. Beside that I build pipes myself. I
have sold some of that pipes, others I use myself.

I heard of you from Mr. Marshall  when I bought a Millville pipe at St. James
Market in London, 2007.

I am very happy and proud to become a new member of your club.

Many greetings from Germany,
Rasmus Foerster
